Hair loss — including alopecia areata (patchy loss), androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness), and telogen effluvium (stress-related shedding) — has distinct TCM interpretations. In Chinese medicine, hair is called the "surplus of Blood" and is governed by the Kidney, which stores Essence. Healthy hair requires adequate Kidney Essence, Liver Blood to nourish the scalp, and good Qi and Blood circulation to the head. Hair loss indicates deficiency of these substances or Blood stasis impeding scalp circulation.
Treatment combines scalp acupuncture with systemic points. Local needling uses the "plum blossom" technique — a seven-star hammer tapped lightly over bald patches to stimulate follicles and increase blood flow. Scalp acupuncture at Baihui (GV20) and Sishencong improves local circulation. KI3 (Taixi) and BL23 (Shenshu) tonify Kidney Essence. LR8 (Ququan) and SP6 (Sanyinjiao) nourish Liver Blood. SP10 (Xuehai) activates Blood circulation to the scalp. For alopecia areata (autoimmune), LI4 (Hegu) and LI11 (Quchi) modulate immune function.
Research in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine has shown acupuncture combined with plum blossom needling produces significant hair regrowth in alopecia areata. Treatment requires commitment — twelve to twenty-four sessions over three to six months — as hair growth cycles are slow. Concurrent stress management and nutritional support (iron, zinc, biotin) enhance results.
Acupuncture can stimulate hair regrowth, particularly in alopecia areata and stress-related hair loss. Plum blossom needling on bald patches stimulates dormant follicles, while systemic points nourish the Kidney Essence and Liver Blood that support hair growth. Results require three to six months of consistent treatment.
Plum blossom needling uses a small hammer with seven short needles tapped lightly over bald patches. This stimulates blood flow to dormant hair follicles and triggers a healing response that promotes regrowth. It is painless — just a mild tapping sensation — and is a classical technique specifically for skin and hair conditions.
